Heather
Moeller
Heather was one of our 1999 recipients. In a letter to us dated
June 19, 2000, she gave us this update on what is happening in
her life. As you read what Heather has to say, it reminds us
what the Angels of '97 Scholarship is all about:
"I wanted to take the opportunity to
thank you again for the scholarship of $2,000 that you awarded
me in '99. Your scholarship made a tremendous difference in
helping my parents pay my tuition @ Appalachian State
University."
"I also wanted to tell you that the
scholarship provided us with enough money so that I did not
have to get a job. Instead of working, I focused more on God,
academics and college life. My first semester's GPA was 3.94,
which enabled me to make the Chancellor's & Dean's List
& to get inducted into Phi Eta
Sigma. My second semester's GPA was 3.84, again making Dean's
List."
"In school I participated in Inter
Varsity worship group and Bible studies which truly
strengthened my relationship with God. Next year I will be
involved w/ a Christian sign language group, called Renascent, that performs to Contemporary
Christian Music."
"I am still pursuing my dream of teaching
by being an elementary education major. I am currently working
in the Residence Life Office at Davidson College
for the summer."
"Again I cannot express how grateful my
family is for your generosity. Please contact us if there is
anything we could do to help your foundation. May God bless you
all!"

Crystal
Machacek
Crystal was one of our 1998 recipients. In a letter to us
dated July 5th, 2001, she gave us this update on what is
happening in her life. Past recipients that met certain
criteria were awarded an additional $500 to help continue
their education. As you read what Crystal has to say, it
reminds us what the Angels of '97 Scholarship is all about:
" First I would
like to thank you with all my heart for the extra money that
you have given me. This is so kind of you to think of us past
recipients. I really needed that extra $500 because I am
taking summer school courses which has
made expenses a little more hard for me. I was praying that
God would help me pay $850 so I could start school again in
the fall. I needed that for my internship that I am taking.
Thank you for being a part of an answer pray.
It is also makes me feel very
honored to be a part of a memory of those that can no longer
be with us. I pray that I can somehow be a little part of
their memory by doing all I can to make this world a little
brighter."

am enjoying it though. I work at the hospital in the
critical care units as a nursing assistant. I have seen
some pretty interesting things, as you can imagine."
"I am a senior at ECU in Nursing School."

I love the school so much, it's
a very large campus."
"My freshman year was
wonderful, filled with a lot of memories, including the

thanks again. I would also like to extend a thanks from my family as well. I

anything I can do to help the committee when I am home on
breaks, please contact me, I would love to help."

Angels
of '97 Sandy
Watkins
Sandy was among our first recipients in 1997. In a
letter to us dated August 22, 2000, she gave us this
update on what is happening in her life. After
working at an internship this summer, she is starting
her last year at Appalachian. As you read what Sandy
has to say, it reminds us what the Angels of '97
Scholarship is all about:
"I
went on a 2 week mission trip to Mexico
with a group from school called Campus Christian
Fellowship. We were pouring cement sidewalks for a
nursing home there. I also went on vacation with my
family for a week to Florida, and the
rest of the time I was working on my internship. I
did my internship at Holy Angels in Belmont. I was
working with people who are mentally retarded. I was
doing some job skills training, working in the social
work office, and having a ball. I got to go with them
to Maggie
Valley
on a retreat which was incredible. They are an
amazing population to work with. I just finished that
up and am now working on my last semester here at
Appalachian."
"I
haven’t decided what I am going to do in December. I
have considered maybe going back to graduate school,
but I’m not exactly sure where the Lord is leading me
at this point. I guess we’ll just have to wait and
see. "
"Just
remember that I am always thinking about you and
praying for you."

Katy was a year 2000 recipient.
In a letter to us dated March 11, 2001, she gave us
this update on what is happening in her life. As
you read what Katy has to say, it reminds us what
the Angels of '97 Scholarship is all about:
"Dear
Angels of 97"
"I
wanted to thank you for the $1500 scholarship that
you gave me last year. It has helped me so much
with my schooling."
"I
am currently at Full Sail in Winter Park, Fla
studying Film and Video Production. I am scheduled
to graduate with an Associate of Science Degree on
Sept 7, 2001. I have learned so much in the 8
months I have been here including how to use a
professional video camera, a 16mm Arriflex professional camera,
how to light for a film, run electric and write a
screenplay."
"On
March 7, 2001, my class finished filming our first
16mm film, which will be edited over the month of
March. All of these experiences would not have been
possible without the scholarship that you gave
me."
"I
currently have a 4.0 G.P.A. and perfect attendance
and hope to maintain both."
Good
luck with the dinner, I am sorry that I will not be
able to attend because of school.

Katy Cook Erin
Cook
Erin was a year 2000 recipient.
In a letter to us dated in July, 2001, she gave
us this update on what is happening in her life.
As you read what Erin
has to say, it reminds us what the Angels of '97
Scholarship is all about:
"Dear Angels of
97"
"I just wanted
to take a minute to thank you for all that you
have done for me. This past year has been
challenging but extremely rewarding. Without your
scholarship, I would not have been able to attend
a private college nor would I have been able to
find my "niche". At Lenoir-Rhyne, I have been able to
get involved in the community as well as find the
support I need to succeed. I appreciate all that
you have done for me and I feel so honored to
have the opportunity to represent all that Angels
embodies. Thank you again for everything and good
luck in the future helping other fortunate
students such as myself."
"Yours
faithfully,"
"Erin Cook"
Here is an update from Erin
from May of 2002:
"Angels of
'97"
"Words cannot
express how much I want to thank you for all your
help with college. I have had such a rewarding
experience here at Lenoir -Rhyne
and none of that would be possible without your
support. I wanted to let you know how your
support was being used. This year, I have been
extremely blessed. I have served as president for
the Campus Activities Board and Wesley
Fellowship, served on SGA and Roteract,
as well as being a Biology Lab assistant and
tutor. I also received the Jerry Shaw excellence
in programming award and the Sophomore of the
Year award. All of this has come by hard work and
sometimes lack of sleep, (but don't think I
haven't been keeping up my school work because I
am so busy, I am expecting straight A's this
semester). In everything I do, I know I reflect
on Angels of '97 and I want you all to know I am
representing you and your angels in a bright and
shining light. I truly appreciate everything that
you have done for me. THANK YOU from the bottom
of my heart."

Angels of 97 Richelle
Byrum
Richelle was a year
2000
recipient.
In a letter to us dated in July 15th, 2001, she
gave us this update on what is happening in her
life. As you read what Richelle
has to say, it reminds us what the Angels of
'97 Scholarship is all about:
"Dear Angels
of 97"
"I am writing
to let you know that it has been an honor to
represent your organization this past school
year, and I am deeply grateful to be able to
represent you this coming school year. Your
scholarship not only has helped me with my
financial expenses, but more importantly to
further my education without having to worry
about those expenses, allowing me to focus on
my school work. "
"I also
thought that I would write to give you an
update on my college life. I will be attending
UNC-Chapel Hill this fall as a sophomore, and
finally getting past those general college
classes and into classes which are more
relevant to my field of study, Public Relations
with a concentration in Business. I did make
the Dean's List last semester, and sincerely
hope to maintain those grades so that I might
make Dean's List every semester until I
graduate in 2004 "
"Because of
the transition to college life, and of the fact
that I was without a car for the first year, I
was not involved as I would have liked to be in
the Chapel Hill
community as a freshman. I was however, a
member of the marching band at Chapel Hill, the
Marching Tarheels,
and deeply enjoyed this activity, as time
consuming as it was. We were actually
hand-selected to march in the 2001 Inaugural
Parade in Washington, D. C. this past January.
This was not only quite the experience, but
also something that I am proud to say all the
members of the band worked hard for. "
"I am
thoroughly looking forward to my sophomore year
at Carolina.
I have been accepted as a Public Relations
intern at the Ronald McDonald House of Chapel
Hill. You must agree with me when I write that
this is not only great practice for me as far
as my career goes, but also a chance for me to
give something back to the community. I will be
volunteering there a total of eight hours a
week. In addition, I am anticipating a
work-study job on campus where I will also gain
some PR knowledge. Add that to eighteen hours
of marching band a week, plus classes and
homework, and I am one busy young woman! But I
have to admit, I consider staying active the
only way to obtain the
true college experience, and I do enjoy it.
"
"In closing,
thank you once again for giving me this
opportunity to better myself. I love UNC-Chapel
Hill and all that it has to offer. I know that
my college education is invaluable to me, not
only so that I might begin a career, but also
in order to get myself in the position where I
can help others. The Angels of '97 is truly a
godsend, for your contribution to not only
college bound students, but to society as a
whole. You have nothing but my admiration and
thanks."

Wishes,"

Thank you

is a very special scholarship to our Kenan.
Please
know the opportunity Kenan had to
participate in this heart-warming

years, gave to her in ways not yet
measured. Additionally, Angels of ’97
provides service above self
opportunities along with community
bonding to all of our North

The inclusion of North Mecklenburg’s

was further confirmation of the
“Angels” community spirit.
In

(Second of
Two Letters)
Hello
Hello, my
name is Elizabeth McGregor, a winner of
the 2003 scholarship. I wanted to
offer my assistance for the 2004
Spaghetti Dinner in March. Please
let me know if there is anything at all
I can do to help you all make it a
success.
I also
wanted to thank you again for the
$4,000 scholarship. It has been a
tremendous help for me and my
family to help pay for my college
education. I am attending St. Andrews Presbyterian College in Laurinburg,
NC
and having a blast! I have
however decided to focus on only one
major which is Elementary Education,
rather than the original plan of double
majoring. The campus is
beautiful, and the people are very
friendly. We all live like a big
happy family! I could not have asked
for anything more in a college.
I am in the award winning Pipe
Band here. We have overcome many
hurdles to win second place in a very
competitive Championship Competition at
Stone Mountain Georgia.
Thanks
again for the scholarship and for
giving me the opportunity to achieve my
childhood dreams. I look forward
to seeing you all in March! Let me know
if I can help.
Again,
Thank you so much for the $4,000
Scholarship.
Sincerely

"I would like to
thank the Angels of '97 scholarship
committee for my son's (Joe Myers) 2004
scholarship. It was such a thrill and
surprise to hear his name announced at
the Senior Awards Day ceremony. We've
always believed a good education is one
of the best things we can give our
children. Thanks in part to this scholarship, Joe is
able to attend Johnson & Wales

"The Angels of

letter written on June 10, 2005.
As you read what Elyse
has to say, it reminds us what the
Angels of '97 Scholarship is all about:
Dear
Angels of ’97 Scholarship Committee,
I was deeply honored to receive the
Angels of ’97 Scholarship at the North Meck Awards.
Through this scholarship, the lives
lost will not be forgotten. I will do
my best to uphold the ideals of the
lives that were lost. This scholarship
will aid me in the pursuit of a career
in Elementary Education. I am so
thankful that you selected me as I am
sure there were many other deserving
applicants. The Angels of ’97 will
always have a place in my heart. Thanks
again for this tremendous opportunity.
Sincerely, Elyse
Berrier
On June 6,
2005, Cindy & Bruce Berrier sent us
this letter. As you read what Elyse's parents
have to say, it reminds us what the
Angels of '97 Scholarship is all about:
Mrs. Jane Bolton
My husband and I are so appreciative of
your efforts to have the Angels of
'97 scholarships in loving memory
of your daughter Laura and the other
children whose lives where ended all
too soon that year as well. It is with
pride for our daughter Elyse, combined
with a lot of sadness for you and all
the other families that did not get to
realize the dreams of their own, that
we enter into receipt of these
scholarships monies. Since Elyse has a twin
sister, having some funds to help us
with all that we face is especially
welcomed.
I have no doubt that Elyse will use her
scholarship monies wisely. Besides
excelling academically, Elyse can best be
described as a "good all-around
person". She has a heart
made of gold and I am confident that
she will exemplify the high ideals in
which this scholarship stands for.
Many thanks for your
time in reviewing her application, and
for entrusting her with this
scholarship money. Thank you for the
investment you are making in her
education.
Sincerely
Cindy & Bruce Berrier

recipient.
We
received this note from Tori. As you read
what Tori has
to say, it reminds us what the Angels
of '97 Scholarship is all about:
Dear Angels of ’97 Committee,
Just wanted to say
thanks again for the scholarship.
Vanderbilt is very expensive, but every
bit helps!
I have had
a great first year! I’m staying busy
with several clubs and activities
including Circle K (a community service
club), Vanderbilt Dance Program, ALD/PES ( a
Freshman honor society that I am
president of), and concert choir. I
also had some wonderful professors and
made Dean’s List both semesters.
This
summer I am staying at Vanderbilt to
work in a biology lad as an intern.
I’ll be there 10 weeks studying DNA
replication. I am enjoying it and
already learning a lot.
Thanks
again, and I hope you all have a great
summer!
Sincerely, Tori
Rollins

Jill Stephens was a 2003 North Meck
recipient.
We
received this June 2005 update from
Jill. As you read what Jill has to say,
it reminds us what the Angels of '97
Scholarship is all about:
Dear Angels of ’97 committee,
Thank you so much for your financial
support throughout the past two years.
I absolutely love Appalachian State
University. Boon is such a gorgeous
little town; so peaceful and
comfortable. I love that I can walk
almost anywhere. I have met some
amazing people up there and have
created wonderful new friendships. I
attend a church regularly and am very
involved with the campus ministry,
Campus Christian Fellowship. Next year,
another girl and I are going to head up
the Follow-up committee where we will
contact new attendees and make them
feel welcome. We will also send out
birthday cards and make cookies! Next
year, three of my best friends and I
are going to live in an apartment. I am
very excited to have my own room and
kitchen! Cafeteria food can get very old!
This past year was definitely
memorable. I enjoyed most of my classes
and completed each course with an
outstanding grade. My professors were
excellent and cared about each student.
I finished out the core curriculum and
started some classes within my major
(elementary education). At last, I am
done with Science!! Next semester, I
will have even more classes dealing
with elementary education and also my
concentration which is going to be art.
I am now home for the summer and love
being with my family. Of course, I miss
all of my friends and EVERYTHING about
Boone, but within a few months I’ll be
back up there in the college routine. I
want to thank you again for your
support.
God Bless,
Jill Stephens

recipient.
We
received this letter from Christine on
June 5, 2005..
As you read what Christine has to say,
it reminds us what the Angels of '97
Scholarship is all about:
Dear
Angels of ’97 Scholarship Committee,
Thank you very much for the scholarship
that you gave me. I feel very honored that
you chose me to represent the Angels of
’97 and I hope that I will represent
them well in all of my academic
endeavors. I am really excited about
starting classes at Chapel
Hill in the fall; I already
love everything about UNC from the few
times I have visited. I attended
orientation June 13 & 14 and I was
able to get all of the classes I wanted
with the earliest class at 9:30 two
days a week. I am really excited about
my Freshman seminar “Where Did All the
Fish Go?”. It
seems like it would be very interesting
since I am also interested in marine
Biology. My intended major is still
physical therapy with a business minor,
but there is still a possibility of me
switching to a medical technician. For
the time being, I am lifeguarding at my
neighborhood pool. Thanks again and I
will keep you updated on my college
experiences.
Sincerely, Christine Ripley

Carolina Senator. I will keep everyone
